Rug hooking has gone to paper

As many of you know, every year I introduce several new patterns to my rug hooking catalog. This year I am adding something new by offering some new patterns exclusively to my etsy shop as PDF files. I have been excited about this format because it allows you to get the instant gratification of downloading a paper pattern after you pay for it without having to wait for it to be shipped. Of course there is no need for shipping charges. This especially pleases me when I think about how much postal prices have gone up for my Canadian customers.

As a bonus, all of my new rug hooking paper patterns have the added fun of coming as a punchneedle paper pattern. Every pattern has a separate smaller version that you can punchneedle embroider in cotton floss or other fine wool yarns.

Those of you unfamiliar with PDF instant downloads will be in for a treat. After your payment has cleared through etsy, you will immediately get a message to download the pattern files onto your computer. There will be a multi-page  instructional PDF that contains one or more color photos of the finished piece along with hooking suggestions and finishing ideas. You will also get a multi-page PDF file that has the full-sized pattern in black and white. Since these designs are small, most of the patterns will be divided on 4 separate pages that are then put together with tape for your finished pattern. The punchneedle pattern is on the next PDF file.

Print out all of your PDF pages or just print the patterns and keep the directions on your computer to refer to as needed. These patterns can be used over and over for your personal use. This is wonderful for making gifts, or just for creating more than one to experiment with style and color.

Herbs is a pattern that was in the Primitive Spirit catalog several years ago. The design was inspired by the old beautiful seed packets of yesteryear, and it started off as a punch needle pattern done in light neutrals. So now I hooked it in a primitive 8 cut (1/4″ wide strips) in antique blacks and faded tones of lavender, rust, and sage greens. I love the way it came out.

Lovely as a wall hanging, I also envisioned it as a pillow, adding more lavender purples in a prodded fringe.

Another fun new pattern is the Hit Or Miss Nest, which also includes the prodded fringe pillow tutorial directions PDF. This fun and simple pattern is a wonderful exercise for learning hit or miss. I think this primitive pattern would also be great hooked in a fine-cut with the eggs done in the traditional Walderboro 3-dimensional style.

Many of you have probably seen glimpse of my wool signs here and there on different posts, but I have been waiting to introduce them until I completed the last one, which was color. I loved hooking Signs, and found them to be wonderful stash busters for my worm piles! Each one was a new exercise in color and technique.

The background for stash was fun, with a confetti look using random spots of color. All three patterns are part of the Signs set when you buy the PDF. And if you make the smaller punchneedle embroidery versions, they can be used in a whole new range of applications such as decorating small boxes and bags.

Hideaway House is a take off on my large Flowerbox rug hooking pattern. This square design makes a fun color study, as you can try a new color combination on small-scale. It has a sawtooth border with houses and flowers.
