August Words

Summertime is still in its glory here in Oregon. I know I have not posted in a long while. And I miss our connection here on my blog. Thank you for checking in on me. I have just posted a bunch of wool on my ETSY shop you can see by clicking here.

I like to keep this place we share as a time to talk craftsy thing. But lately I have had so many health challenges that I just could not post. I really did not want to make this into my health blog. But the time has come and I did want to share a bit of what I have been experiencing, because I think that there is a unspoken epidemic happening across the nation. Many folks like me are living in quiet misery and have discovered that doctors don’t seem to have any answers and cures. Maybe a label, but no hope otherwise. And I mean many, many doctors visits to all kinds of practitioners over many years of searching.

I am talking about digestive health, brain fog, fatigue, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, and insomnia. And family and friends are fed up with us because we look absolutely fine. But WE know we are not fine. We feel like we are watching the rest of the world carrying on all around us, but we are not living our lives. We are desperately looking for answers.

This is a long story that spans the years of my rug hooking business. I pushed through sickness as I could but I just got worse until I could not travel at all. What I want to share is that I have found some answers for myself that might help you if you are also suffering.

I discovered that what you put into your body, will either make your suffer or heal you. For me (and many others) what causes suffering is: gluten and grains, dairy, processed sugar, soy, caffeine, alcohol, corn, canola, and processed foods. Fresh, whole foods, meats, vegetables, and fruit are healing me. Truly, let thy food by thy medicine. This point can not be stressed enough.

I discovered that because I could not digest foods, my body was not getting the nutrition it needed. I was getting depleted in amino acids, such as GABA and seritonin. So along comes anxiety and insomnia. I just started supplementing with GABA and L-tryptophan and I feel like a new person. And this happened quite rapidly! Read Trudy Scott’s book The Antianxiety Food Solution to get answers and hands on help for your suffering. You can learn so much just by reading her blog here. Help is on the way!

I learned that we don’t live in the same world that our parents and grand parents grew up in. We are the processed food generation living in a world bombarded with toxins on a daily basis. This is not an exaggeration. If you have been diagnosed with one of many mystery illnesses, there is hope. You will need to become your own health advocate and take your health seriously. You can do it. I found hope and answers here:

Thank you for reading this. Please share it with others you know who are searching for help.

I also wanted to share with you that I have dived back into painting. I am finding that it has become a part of my healing, as it reveals to me what is going on below the surface.

And what is below the surface is the soul. Who I really am. The eternal part of Karen.

I am blessed to have you visit today ~ Karen

I understand completely where you are coming from…I am on lyrica, gaba did not help. Way too many processed foods out there..I do not eat red meat, chicken and pork, too many hormones and there are at times forced fed. I find fish is good but still I watch where it comes from and it needs to be fresh. My friends know that, when they visit and eat..there will be no condiments of any kind and everything will be fresh.
I am glad you are feeling better and have started to paint. Your a very creative person.

    • cindy, thanks so much for sharing your story. i urge you to read trudy’s book/blog. she does what is called a “trial” with the amino acids until the right combination is found. however since you are on lyrica, you will need your doctor’s advice with proceeding with them. it takes a bit of trial and error. and GABA is not the only choice. and she is specific about how to take it, when to take it, and how to dose it. prior to learning this i was taking GABA capsules and they did nothing for me.
don’t give up on finding a solution. i am taking GABA theonine with 5HTP mornings and mid morning, and then tryptophan afternoon and evenings. she only recommends LIDKE tryptophan, which i agree with as another brand did not work. all the best at being well!

  3. I am glad you have reached out to us because you have been missed and healing thoughts were sent and are continuing. We are all such victims of the industrial food producers and it is a challenge for so many of us to figure out how to live in a healthful way.
So glad that you are on the upward grade!!
Reach out when you can and we will be there!

  4. Thank you for sharing. I have a similar issue, and it drives me crazy that every one think I am ok, but I am not. You need to see a neurologist. Mine has been most helpful. Other doctors have not understood my diagnosis, and don’t want for me to take my meds, but I do anyway. I love you as a friend. We will never give up on you.

  5. I am so sorry you have been ill! You are on the right path, tho. Funny side note, my mother was a registered nurse. We were visiting one evening waaaay back in the 1950s when I was about 10 years old. She said,”You know, I wouldn’t be surprised if they found the cure to cancer in the food we eat.” She was right on the money.

I know you hear this all the time, but your wool and your patterns are SO beautiful….and they bring me comfort and peace. Thank you for that!

I will be praying for you as you walk down this road to good health. The Bible tells us that God gave us all sorts of good food to heal us and make us feel well. I do not know if you are a Believer in the saving work of Jesus, but I hope so.

  6. Karen your post really hit home with me. I have suffered with exact same symptoms for years and add extreme joint pain to the list. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and Hashimotos disease. About six or seven years ago I read the Wheat Belly books by Dr. Davis. I folllow a gluten and grain free diet and avoid processed foods and sugars. It was tough at first but when I started to feel better I knew there was something to it. I have found many great people online who helped me tremendously to stick with this way of life. There are so many good recipes that I rarely feel deprived and enjoy trying new things to eat! I hope you continue to feel better and find the help you need. I know the suffering in silence routine well. Unfortunately people who haven’t dealt with our kind of problems have a hard time relating. But speaking out as you have done lets us know there are others going through the same thing.

  9. Thank you Karen for sharing this information. I am a nurse and the first thing I thought when I read your symptoms was the gluten free approach, natural foods, no additives etc. Hope you are feeling much better and can continue with your work and share your creative talents with all of us. 10. Oh yes…Sadly, yes. I am that generation and I have been to too many doctors as well. I found an Integrative Medicine doctor that helped some. The frustrating thing is, what works for some of us doesn’t work for others. We must get to know our body and listen to what it is telling us. Most of the time that is done through trial and error; excluding these foods and introducing others back in until we find that right balance. I found that processed sugar will make me feel ill every time. There is a delayed reaction but I can always trace it back to that, among many of the foods you listed. I also strongly believe that, in my case, hormones play a role in all of this. Those harmful foods affect our thyroid and adrenal glands, wreaking havoc on our bodies. I’m glad to hear you finally found some answers. It’s hard to be creative when we hurt, can’t sleep, and feel anxious. Thank you for sharing your experience. It is a lonely place when no one understands how we are hurting. Others can be helped just by knowing this.

    • leonora, thank you for dialoging with me on this and sharing your experience. you bring up an important point, and that is to listen to what our bodies are trying to tell us. this is a new skill that i am trying to learn. how foods effect us sometimes is a delayed reaction, which i find baffling.

I too have cut out gluten, dairy, soy, caffeine, sugar and processed foods. I feel so much better and my joint pain has decreased without any drugs. God bless you and keep up the great work! I love your blog!

  13. I empathize. I am a life long sufferer of anxiety and panic disorder. For me meds, exercise, friends and prayer are what eventually re-center me. And being open about it ! I’ve also found perimenopause can be a nasty contributor. In our area people are being trained to deal with panic attacks just like being trained in cpr.
    Very best to you Karen…

  15. I don’t think I’ve ever read here before. I like your work.

I too am a processed foods child, although I suspect not as much as I could have been due to Mom’s chea…. ummm thrifty ways. The bigger issues I see are the mindset of “there’s a pill for that”, lack of time/patience/$ to explore diet solutions, and downright confusion about all the food plans that conflict and all claim to be the miracle cure-all. And then there’s all the studies funded by sugar industry that got the fats are evil thinking shoved into our minds for the last ?? decades. Now the science is starting to put the word out that sugar is the real culprit, and the sugar substitutes are even worse. It’s no wonder people don’t know who to trust or where to turn! I suspect that which food plan is right may come down to a person’s genetics combined with what toxins they’ve been exposed to in life. Do cleaning & laundry products contribute? What about all the air fresheners we inhale? Even what and how much exercise is in conflict from various factions, other than they all say “move it!”. What a tangled messy pile of questions!

Enough of my babbling! I’m glad you’ve found some solutions to your health issues, and agree that diet is often overlooked as a solution. 🙂

  17. Karen, I have missed you and only today rediscovered your blog. You were my inspiration for many months. I have used your heart flowers paper pattern, purchased at ATHA in Louisville. And I followed your blog to make a spiral chair pad that fits perfectly in an antique rocking chair that was my great-great Aunt’s. So good to know you are finding your way back to health. My health struggle and journey is much different than yours. I’m happy to say that during this pandemic year I have achieved renewed strength at age 75 through Yoga. It has been a gradual process over many months. I’m so grateful for virtual classes I can do at home and several excellent, caring teachers.

  18. Hi Karen,
I’m sorry to hear you’ve not been well and I’m glad you’ve found some answers. You are absolutely right about processed foods. Not great nutrition. We spend 6 months in New Zealand before the pandemic and very little of their food is processed, including packaged food. The longer we stayed the better we felt. Took some of those lessons home with us, but it’s much harder to stick with the plan here.
I hope your health continues to be restored.
    Hugs,
    Martha
